Aachen Cathedral was the very first site to be granted UNESCO World Heritage status in Germany. It was built around 790 to 800AD and Imperial Coronations kept Aachen at the centre of world politics over many centuries.

The Cathedral is the final resting place of the legendary Charlemagne. Charlemagne's aspiration was to construct a new Rome when he made Aachen the centre of his empire in approximately 800AD. The oldest part of the Cathedral was once the Imperial Palace's Chapel and was to be the religious centre. It took a decade to construct the massive octagonal domed building.

An architectural work of genius combined styles from the eastern and western regions of the Holy Roman Empire. Charlemagne was buried in the Palatine Chapel following his death in 814. His sarcophagus can be found in the Gothic Chancel, near to the Imperial Throne.
